All,

I have been using POV-RAY for a while on my NT machine and just recently
installed it on my Windows 98 machine. My problem is with the fonts. POV-Ray
seems to be applying some sort of algorithm to the ASCII code and turning my
text into junk. As an example if I type in "ThnF" I get in return "*47#". At
first I thought POV-Ray was just substituting the memory address of the
sting instead of the actual data but this is not so. I can type in "TTT" and
I will get "***". I can type in "FFF" and I will get "###". I am using
POV-Ray 3.1 for Windows and I have Windows 98 Version A. I have tried
reinstalling the program with no success. I would greatly appreciate any
help or advice on the matter.

Have you tried it with different fonts?

I was going to suggest the same thing but knowing that our resident
POV-Ray font expert was going to come along and suggest something more
elegant I held off. That will teach me :)

Oh, well if I knew I held that title, I'd have gone ahead and blamed it on
horrible Apple Mac TTF fonts. They sure are ugly beasties.

But it could be because POV-Ray is looking for the Apple support only. Or
the more likely case that it is using a cmap with encoding type 6, which is
broken in the standard POV. Once Dan lets us know more details on his
problems, it will all come clearer.

Yes, I have. It produces the same results but, the characters are in that
font style. So I get an Arial * etc ...

I guess I should have kept the original text on so people can see what I was
replying to ;)

Yes, I have tried all the fonts in my fonts dir. They all repeat the same
results. I continue to get the different characters, but they are just
represented in their respective font type. So, the program is seeing the
font dir; it can read the fonts, but it is just mixing up the acsii code it
seems like.

Thanks for the help :)

Dan

Which version of POV-Ray?
3.0? 3.1, 3.1g, Superpatch? MegaPOV?

I am using POV-Ray 3.1.g.watcom.win32 (I got this info from the about box).

I am working on the ttfdump and I'll send the results over as soon as it
finishes downloading.

Got it. The problem is that the Apple Mac cmap in your fonts (platform ID 1,
format 0) is of Format 6, Format 6 is broken in the official POV-Ray. Strange
that all my Windows 98 fonts have no problems, but all yours do.

The SuperPatch would probably work for you for now.

Jon,

That fixed the problem! Is this an know issue for POV-Ray or should I
submit
a bug report on it? Thanks again for all the help! You're the man ;)
