I wonder how hard it would be to read a font and create a function whose 
value is zero (or negative) outside and "distance from boundary" inside. 
  Or, as long as I'm wishing for a pony, the function should have a flat 
maximum along the midline of each stroke.

What I have in mind is a round version of the "GEB" jigsaw monogram, 
using isosurfaces.

  What you are looking for is the holy grail of raytracing. Unfortunately
it's not possible in general (even though it may be possible in very
specific cases; font's *might* be such a case, but I wouldn't bet on it).

  A (fast) distance-from-object-surface function would be the holy grail
of raytracing because it would allow easy non-linear transformations and
other nice effects. Unfortunately it's not that easy.
