Questions where asked about it, but do to a lack of support for rexec
functionality in the Win32 version of PVM (I think that was the name, can't
remember), porting over wouldn't be easy..

From what I remember there is something like that written in Java
for the IMP. It's available on the IMP website at
http://www.imp.org/ Presumably you want to render an animation on
multiple machines.

I still have no success story about windos here.
IIRC there was a try a few months ago (maybe when you asked for the
latest time ;-), using GNU tools, but it did not succeed. I don't know
why it doesn't work. I often read the comp.parallel.pvm newsgroup, and
usually people in trouble with nt and friends finish with something
running, even with ssh.
As suggested, what people at the late imp project did seemed to enable
distributed rendering of anims, but pvm (and mpi) systems are AFAIK the
only ones working with still images.
It would be a good thing to make it work, but it might be interesting to
find something working better under windos if somebody ever starts
pvmpov 3.5. But it seems we have some time left to think about it.
BTW, did anybody make a try with OsX? It is supposed to be based on BSD,
so chances to make it work should be higher...

Actually, I want to do single images over a cluster of Windows PCs each of
which have 2 processors.
I currently use mpi for other applications. Is there a version of pov that
works with mpi? Even pvm would be ok.
Thanks.

There are at least 2 versions of POV built with mpi:
http://www.ce.unipr.it/pardis/parma2/povray/povray.html
http://www.verrall.demon.co.uk/mpipov/
I know some people tried them, but as usual it was under some form of
un*x.

Couldn't you render different "slices" of the image on different
computers, and "glue" them together after rendering? I know this isn't
the optimum solution, but it might be of some use to you.
It should also be possible to help this task along with a simple batch
file, or a simple C program that controls the splitting, rendering,
and gluing process.

This is a possibility if all other measures fail.
