We could not call it 0.6b because there are a few new features.
Suppose you create a source in 0.6b and use the new curves_postprocess
and send that to a friend who uses 0.6a.
He will be confused, because his 0.6a would say that he needed mp 0.6!!
Other version numbers checking like 0.6a or 0.6b are not implemented in
mp and calling it 0.7 is an easy way out :-)
Some of you wonder why there is a 0.7 when 0.6a was supposed to be the
last untill 3.5.
Well, because we (Smellenbergh) wanted to create a version for the new
Macintosh operating system (MacOS X), Nathan agreed that we could easely
add some bug fixes (and some new bugs :-) )too instead of just putting a
version with known bugs on the net.
So, Nathan has been kind, as always, to the Macintosh-Pov-community and
the Macintosh-Pov-commuinity has been kind, as always, to all Pov-users
:-)
Thanks Nathan!

Mark Gordon [POV-Team] provides the compilable UniMegaPOV source for
general Unix-variants at
http://www.mailbag.com/users/mtgordon/megapov.html.
Because Mark is quite busy right now, the source may not be updated to
MegaPOV v0.7 for a while.

The POV-Team will continue to support an official version of POV-Ray
for the Linux platform.
This discussion refers to the *unofficial* MegaPOV. Mark Gordon
[POV-Team] is kind enough to provide the MegaPOV generic Unix source for
compile at http://www.mailbag.com/users/mtgordon/megapov.html, but it is
for an older version of MegaPOV, not v0.7 at this time.

Finally got around to patching together a unix/linux build. For anyone
who's had trouble spinning their own, I put up a temporary page with
binaries and modified sources at http://members.home.net/ceckak/mpov07 .
This is just a cobbled together build, but it gets the job done.

You can compile megapov for unix yourself. It's not that big problem if
you know how to make a generic makefile.
Of course even a makefile is not needed (makefiles are handy when you are
modifying and recompiling the source code several times). You can just
compile everything with a simple command like:
gcc -O3 *.c -o megapov
(Well, you'll need the unix/ directory which comes with the official
povray and then you'll probably compile it inside this directory with
something like "gcc -I.. -I. -O3 *.c ../*.c -o megapov".)

main(_,c,m){for(m=32;c=*i++-49;c&m?puts(""):m)for(_=(
c/4)&7;putchar(m),_--?m:(_=(1<<(c&3))-1,(m^=3)&3););} /*- Warp -*/

and replace the changed files with the new 0.7 version. I did not yet try
it, but AFAIK there are no new source files added, so the old makefile
should work.

Actually, I've just updated it to 0.7 (And it's identical to MegaPov since all my
patches were added to 0.7)
