Hi. Is there any benefit to SketchUp, either free or pro version, over say the
combined powers of povray and blender?

It makes it quicker to sketch certain types of things... That's about
it, as far as I can tell. (Then again, I've never used Blender...)

It won't cause you to go bald while trying to figure out the interface.

Oh, I wouldn't say that...

(E.g., how THE HELL do you make the polygon tool draw an octagon instead
of a hexagon? You'd think typing "8" would do this, but nooooo...)

SketchUp is targetting easy CAD architectural projects. Blender is a polygonal
modeller targetting animations. You may do technical or CAD stuff with it, just
as you may use a spoon to get your ass out of prison.

True, Blender is supremely powerful, but I often find myself trying to
figure out how to hold the saw to make something work.

With Pov, if feels as if you can quickly build your own saw (the Pov
language) that saws just the way you want to. But then again I feel as if I
can only saw in straight edges - while Blender can do sguiggly lines, but
its harder to wield the saw.

Actually, with Blender's regular updates, it is incredibly hard to keep
current with new tools and new ways of behaviour / use of old tools - where
I suppose SketchUp is more stable? I. e. you have -time- to learn how
everything works, before they go and update a tool AGAIN. (Making it
better, but now you have to re-learn how it works.)

YMMV though!

Haven't used it for a long time, but that was exactly how it used to work -
does it not work anymore?

Typing 8 just changes the size of the polygon to 8 meters. It doesn't
affect the number of sides.

You might be shocked by this, but there's online help....
