Apparently our company is experiencing a "spending freeze". In other
words, no non-essential expenditure.

Fair enough.

As a result, I'm now having to beg for the money to replace a computer
monitor that has stopped working.

But get a load of this... One of the office bods has just come round
with a biiiig box of complimentary tea sashets with the company logo on
them and a pretty orange ribbon. Because we don't know what else to do
with them.

It's nice to know that the company is too skint to pay for stuff we
actually need, but there's still plenty of money to blow on ridiculous
promotional novelties.

(Notice that my company's line of business has absolutely nothing to do
with tea. I have no idea where we got the tea from, but it smells...
well, the box says on it "your partner for science", but *damn*, what
did they put *in* this stuff?? It smells like liquified peppermint...!)

But you're still British! And British and no tea is a sacrilege! :D

Of course! Marketing always comes first when it comes to expenditure.

I'm guessing some holiday blend, using peppermint oil?

You could always take their tea and dump it in the harbor ;)

Sure. Because promoting our services is *far* more important than...
say... BEING ABLE TO CARRY THEM OUT!

Right?

Does anybody *else* ever feel like they're trapped in a Dilbert strip?

Postponed until after Christmas.

Thanks to the guys in here, I have a newly updated CV. And I've got an
idea where I'm going to send it. I'm just going to wait until after
Christmas until I actually send it.

(Presumably the guys I send it to will completely ignore me like every
other company on the face of the Earth has, but you gotta try these
things...)

Except that the person (or persons) who decide what is and isn't essential
is normally the last person you want deciding that sort of thing.

Apparently we're also experiencing a "hiring freeze".

So why is it that roughly twice a month I get a notification of
*another* new person joining the company? :-.

Basically the tennis went like this:

IT: Hey people, you need to notify us before new people start if you're
expecting them to get a new PC. Either that or finance needs to let us
keep a stock of spares around. Finance, what do you guys say?

Finance: We're currently on a hiring freeze, so it's a non-issue.

[I find myself wanting to interject that in the last few weeks we've
hired not one but *four* new people - which is a huge influx for such a
small site.]
