Yup. I think it's because in the UK it's short for "cross-trainers"
which we're starting to see in stores here now as a type of "speciality
sneaker".

Because that's the new you, you see.

Yes.

They're called cross-trainers here too, if they're not designed for a
specific sport. Otherwise we have basketball shoes (with a pivot in the
treads under the balls of the feet), tennis shoes (which have no treads),
running shoes and walking shoes (different heel designs), etc.
I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something else called trainers, like
a type of shirt or some such. :-)

bad idea. That could give somebody the idea of checking what Andy writes
about the people in his company. Depending on the taste of humor of
people working there, he might be looking for a job earlier than expected.

I agree. If I were him, I wouldn't give the group a photo. While he
can't actually be honest about the reason to take the photo, he
shouldn't do it at all.

Well, that and technically if he wanted to take a picture of someone to
post in a public space, he really should get their permission to do so
first. He wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of someone's anger
over having their picture posted without permission.

Yes. That would make sure nobody likes him at work. That's why the only
possible answer to the question "why do want a photo of me" is the truth
in this kind of case.

Ah yes, I can just see the look of horror on her face now... ;-)
