Yeah, that's more or less the trick. I tried it with a location I'm less
familiar with - the town my wife grew up in - and I ended up one state to
the west.

Ditto here, just looked along the Alps in roughly the right place until I
saw the lake that I live near, then it was easy.
For the house I grew up in it's also very easy, I know exactly where the
town is in relation to a small island, and the house is right on the outside
edge of that town.
I wouldn't attempt to find my father's house though, he lives in the middle
of a massive built up area where every street looks the same, without the
map overlay there is no way I could find it without a lot of time zoomed
right in.

Took me something like 3-4 minutes to find the exact placement of my
home without the labels.

Oh, I've already done this. Several times. I can now get from the view
of the whole Earth to the view of my car [the one I no longer have, BTW]
without any labels at all. Which is impressive, when you consider I'm
120 miles inland with no notable geographic features nearby.
(I must say though, at low magnification Google just shows off the
different colourings of its map chunks rather than the features of the
Earth!)

I thought I loved the girl I had *in* the car, thus causing me to not
pay sufficient attention to where I was going... o_O

Bah. 3.5 minutes, 'cuz I spent most of it looking one town south of where I
am.

Heh, well, I'm glad you're ok. The girl was ok?
Never had a crash in any car myself so far, (touch wood), but had
*many* on motorbikes, (shouldn't be here really).

This happened years ago. But yeah, nobody was seriously hurt - although
there were several insurance claims to the contrary...

I've yet to meet a biker who hasn't spent at least a few days in a coma.
...not a good sign, eh? o_O

Only a minute or 2. Dallas is pretty easy to spot from an areal map, and
I know the layout of the roads so I pretty much just zoomed in right on it.
