Is it a SATA drive? Check that the cable is ok.
Those damned SATA cables get loose too easily. It has scared me a couple
of times.

Nope. Good old fashioned Parallel ATA. The new one is SATA though. I can
understand how they'd work themselves loose.

Well, the PATA connectors almost need power tools to remove. The SATA
connectors are much looser.

Well I was going to ask if it was a Barracuda
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/01/16/barracuda_failure_plague/
anyway fair warning to anyone here who runs one.

I replaced a Hitachi "Deathstar" with a seagate barracuda. Two of them
actually, and they nearly managed to both fail at the same time in a RAID 1.
Why the seagate? Because at the time seagate has a reputation of making the
best drives. Really can't trust any manufacturer these days.

Has anyone tried the upgrade, yet?
A friend of mine doesn't dare to turn off his computer
until he has saved all important data.

I recently had to return a Western Digital HD that only lived a single month...
sudden death of the drive electronics I guess. The BIOS still found the drive,
but wasn't even able to identify it.

I can imagine the POST of that machine:
Primary Master...Seagate Barracuda ST320056A
Primary Slave....Something found!

It was rather disturbing plugging in my USB HD, getting the little "Dadink!"
sound, waiting a minute or two, and then having it show up as "USB device"
but nothing else. Turns out I'd misplugged the drive, so it wasn't actually
connected to the interface. Interesting effect.

Had that happen after replacing the internal drive, I plugged in my
external, and fired it up, only to have it shut down immediately after.
Turns out the plug wasn't fully seated in the computer's socket.
