It was rather disturbing plugging in my USB HD, getting the little "Dadink!" 
sound, waiting a minute or two, and then having it show up as "USB device" 
but nothing else.  Turns out I'd misplugged the drive, so it wasn't actually 
connected to the interface.  Interesting effect.

Had that happen after replacing the internal drive, I plugged in my 
external, and fired it up, only to have it shut down immediately after.

Turns out the plug wasn't fully seated in the computer's socket.
