I'm 97% sure you'll be able to answer this...
You know when somebody says something like "the TCP protocol", but the P
already stands for "protocol", so they're really saying "the
transmission control protocol protocol"... annoying, isn't it?... is
there a name for that particular mistake?

Reminds me of FAT tables, or "please respond with an RSVP". Dunno if
there's a name for it though.

I don't know if that has any name assigned to, but what I do know is
that in Finnish that's officially perfectly valid, as specified by the
Research Institute for the Languages of Finland, the official organization
which specifies what is correct Finnish and what isn't.
I would be surprised if this wasn't the case with many other languages
as well, including English.
"The TCP protocol" is thus correct, and if you need to "open it", you
say "the transmission control protocol".
Anything else is hairsplitting.

Well, well. I asked Wikipedia about it, and so far I've just spent a
whiel reading about such unrelated topics as "article" and "particle"...

Yes. I once got flamed on a list for calling it "An ATM machine". The
person managed to flame me before even getting down to the second
paragraph describing how some ATM machines use the ATM protocol to
communicate with the host bank.
Seemed kind of silly.

I don't know that "Sahara Desert" is the same type of redundancy, though
- I understand that the word "Sahara" means "Desert", but that's
different from "SQL Language".

Well, there's that too. I live near "La Jolla Cove". Where "La Jolla" in
Spanish is "cove". (Assuming you spell it right, which "La Jolla" isn't.)
Back on the east coast, there's a place called something like "Mount
Campbell Hill", except it's about 5 words long, and each word is "Hill"
in a different language. Apparently, every time someone new conquered
the region, they called it "Yadda yadda hill" in the local language, and
it just grew from there.
