I know there are some New Yorkers out there reading p.o-t. Anything this
southern girl should see while I'm here? Any good vistas for a
photograph that isn't the postcard stuff? Nothing too touristy, I went
to the top of buildings back when I was a kid. Just looking for some
interesting clubs to hit, maybe a generally geeky place to hang out.
And no advise to visit B&H Photo. Already heading back there tomorrow,
and I'm afraid I won't leave without more camera gear.

Try to get twofer tickets and see a B'way show. Predictable, maybe, but
it still sets the standard. 'Rent' has wide appeal, I think my
daughter has seen it 5 or 6 times. Also look at BAM, (Brooklyn Academy
for the Arts) Its getting rave reviews for this one:

In Manhattan the Lower East Side is still the hip place.
Stanton-to-Rivington Orchard-to-Ludlow. The cutting edge is progressing
downward, Ludlow-Canal-Division. Williamsburg's north side is of course
the Lower East Side annex and for many, the hippest of all. The
Meatpacking District is more tourist and B&T (bridge and tunnel)
pretentious. Same with the 'Chelsea' and "Flatiron' clubs. Should
probably steer clear, but it depends what you want.
If you are in town a few days I would love to meet you. I am off Monday
the 12th all day (which is today already), Tuesday eve (tomorrow), and
all day Wednesday.

Not sure what you are looking for with photography, but something you
might not think of as a Manhattan-bound tourist are the 'elevated'
subway tracks found in the boroughs. The 'Broadway' stop on the N-W line
in Astoria, Queens is a favorite on mine. Or maybe the stop at Flushing
and Broadway (different Broadway) on the J-M line past Williamsburg. Of
course Coney Island is always a photographer mecca.

MOMA is cool. The last two times I went, I actually saw 3D animations.
There are cafes in MOMA where one can get a wine, if not beer, and are
artsy-fartsy, if not geeky.
