Far cry was fun. Very difficult, but fun. My rather old machine handled it
just fine.

Yep, that's it in one.

Yes. Why is that a surprise?
Granted, I don't know many specifics about the DirectX API, but AFAIK
it has been designed to be quite flexible so that programs can actually
ask the API if some feature is supported (by hardware or at all) or not,
and act accordingly.

No, I'm just checking I understand correctly.
(Obviously the "simplest" thing to do would be to assume one level of
DirectX and fail if any other level is present. It also seems likely
that it wouldn't be that hard to check and use until available features
- I was just checking whether that is what they actually did.)

And I thought you weren't into first person shooters!
Far Cry has excellent graphics considering when it came out and the systems
it will run on. And quite difficult as well...

I tried the demo for Crysis on my few-months-old quad core 2, 3 GB RAM,
GeForce 7350 LE...average FPS: around 1. Maximum FPS: 4. Can we say
"if you want to play Crysis, get a decent graphics card"?

Wow. o_O
So I guess this is going to have to wait another 5 years or so until I
upgrade mine...

Hmm. Almost everybody has commented that "it's very hard". Given that I
*still* haven't completed HL2:EP2 yet because it's too hard, perhaps
getting this game would just be a waste of time...

I'm not often. I sometimes use them to blow off stream (metaphorically, of
course)
I found a second hand copy at a computer shop in Randburg. R60. For that...

<sigh>
Just download the demo and try it - it's free. The demo is the first
mission, it's good, and if you can run that, you can run the rest with your
system.
Last word on this.
