I could never see anything on these. Both character-based and image-based.

The idea is to simply look at the image cross-eyed, so you see double,
and make the repeats line up exactly.

The character-based ones are hard, because unless you have the right
size typeface, it's almost impossible to see. Also, you can only
generate fairly large steps in depth, which easily throws the illusion
off. FWIW, the algorithm for generating random dot images is identical
(but with colours instead of characters).

Try this:

ABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEABCDEA

   *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *

The right half is completely blank, the left half contains a simple image.

If you cross your eyes, each little star at the bottom becomes a *pair*
of stars. If you move your eyes such that the stars appear to exactly
overlap, then you've either returned to normal focus, or you've unlocked
the image. (The hard part is moving to look at other bits of it without
going back into normal focus.)

Do this for long enough, and you will develop a nasty headache. ;-)

Nice motive. :)

I think you didn't get my point though. I preferred the previous image,
because when I looked at it the way I prefer (parallel-eyed rather than
cross-eyed) then the motive appeared as I preferred (bulging out rather than
being carved in). There were two reversals, which meant I liked it just the
way it was, even though I used it a different way than intended. :)

If you have one eye that behaves differently to the other, you will
never see one. You can be e.g. shortsighted, as long as both eyes are
equally shortsighted! If both your eyes are the same, practice is all
that's required...

That reminds me of a lecturer we had at uni. One eye would look at you,

Yep - never ever been able to see one.

I understand the principle, but again... never ever been able to see one.

Good one! The digits get quite confused, but I suppose it can't be
helped in a situation like this :)
