Hello everybody,

I will change my home computer by another. I will buy a Pentium and I will
put two HDS, one with Windows XP and other with Linux. What kind of graphich
target can we suggest to see the POV-Ray pictures 100%?
At the moment I have a Pentium IV with 128Mb the RAM and the processor is a
1'4 Mhz, the graphic target is an "ATI Rage Fury Pro/Xpert2000 Pro", I want
a better target.

Pov-ray doesn't use any kind of hardware acceleration. Raytracing is
calculated only with processor so forget to buy any kind of graphic target
to accelerate the render. If you want the render go fast (and the computer)
expend money in all RAM you can buy. This will make the render fast because
it won't have to use the HD for Virtual Memory. P1,4 Ghz and 128 RAM sucks.
Mine is AMD K7 600 Mhz with 320 RAM and surely goes better than you. If you
are going to buy a new computer it surely goes about 2,4 GHz and 256 or 512
RAM. Buy 1024 RAM or more !!!.

And, I would add to that based on my own bitter experience,... adequate 
cooling!

Hi Manuel and Jim,

Yes, all understood. I think 2GB RAM it's enough and the processor de 3.X
(X=any numer). I have listened about a new kind of processor "HiperTrindink"
(I think) that they work very well with mathmatical operations. Do you know
them?

Guess that must be HyperThreading  :-D

I have a Pentium IV 3.06 GHz with the HT. Been a while since I looked at 
benchmarks about the Intel HyperThreading. I think it improves POV-Ray's use 
of FPU but only when nothing else is running. In other words, two instances 
of POV is like running them on two conventional CPU's. Better to run only 
one instance of POV, then the system can do whatever else at the same time. 
The gain HT has is mostly in multitasking.

I can't remember what results I had when testing out the HT CPU but I know 
it wasn't doing very well with two instances of POV-Ray assigned to each 
virtual CPU.

P.S.

Oleguer, your weather (from e-mail) makes it seem pleasant there compared to 
here. Lost power for two hours today during a thunderstorm, temperature 
going from 90 F to 70 F (32 C to 21 C) with some marble-sized hail. Had to 
unplug the computer during a render taking six hours, would rather save the 
computer than the rendering.

Yes, that's it HyperThreading, I did not know the name properly.
So the graphic target isn't very important, only are important de processor
and the RAM memory. Here I only have 128 Mb, it isn't enough to work and the
processor is too old. I will be careful with the CPU cooling, I will tray to
keep it cold.

P.S.: Yes, here the weather I think is much pleasant than in your locality.
Today was cloudy and with the heat index very high. This days the
temperature is some warm.
The last week the computer stopped with a render taking 5 hours and a half.
It isn't pleasent hihi.
