Got a quick question for you all..
I've had Pov 3.1 for a few months now. Learning it all by experince..

Done some water (not EXTREMLY pleased) and I've done some other stuff
using basic shapes.. like the torus and such.

My question is, should I invest the time to go to MegaPov and have Pov as a backup
plan?

I've heard some good things about MegaPov.

My ultimate goal is to make some landscapes.. I know POV can't do it all,
and I would have to get other utils to do some of the stuff.

Any help would be great!

Thanks
Dave

If there's something in MegaPOV that you need like IsoSurfaces then do it,
but otherwise stick with 3.1.

The two can work side by side without any problems so you'll still have 3.1 even
if you install MegaPOV. 3.1 is slightly faster aswell (according to my own tests
here on this Linux box).

What I ultimately want to do are some space scenes, which I know I need to get a
lens flare for..

And I want to maek a temple that has the stoneish look of stonhenge, with fog
and the like..

As well, I want grass (found inc's for that) and such.. No animation for this scene,
but I would for others. I'm having problems make the Stone look..

Is there anything in megapov that does this?

You can make some really good stones with IsoSurfaces. Have a look around for
stone, rock and brick macros.

Also see the example scenes that come with pov for to get a start on a good texture.

Why don't use POV 3.5? It's better than MegaPov.

I would not suggest the current beta for a new user right now, since there
are still quite some problems. Not that megapov is bug free, but the 3.1
features all work and a lot of the new features can be used without much
problems too.

On the other hand some parts of megapov will most surely be discontinued
in their current form so it would be better to learn the 3.5 style right
away.

The 3.5 beta doesn't have any limitation that would stop a new user from
fully using and learning it. I would recommend using it.

Apart from for example that you can't use png's in heightfields right now.

Well... there is the fact that as the installation files change it will
require a fresh install again and again until finalized out of beta.
I've got a mess of an Insert Menu and \scene\ directory because I keep
installing over the previous ones all the while filenames have been
changing. I'd have removed POV-Ray entirely (except for my own files)
earlier but I wanted to keep the history of changes for now.

i'm a newbie too, dave. i was shy of anything that wasn't
the latest established version of pov-ray... went thru a period
several years ago downloading and running all sorts of betas,
and some of them were very hard on a system (bad crashes).

but i don't think that pov-ray is that way. i'm going for either
megapov or v3.5. the reason? when you go to the images
and animations groups, it seems like 90% of them are
accomplished using non-3.1 features. and THEN, when those
guys (are there any women pov-rayers here?) are generous
enough to post the source, you GOTTA have it... GOTTA be
able to run it.

have you seen the torch? the tornado? GEEZ! too bad that
awesome is an overused word. and thats just to mention a
couple. the images and animations groups are one place
where it truly is "all good".

good luck, miker
