I'm interested in rendering human models. I don't think POVray can do
this.....
I've heard of Poser... but how much does it cost??

You can do it in POV - someone here in the n.g. made a human model using
blobs.

That would be Peter Houstons' BlobMan:

It's not Poser, but then Poser has the edge on the human figure models.

Povray can render anything...

What you should do is to model them first. Modelling humanoids (organics)
is a bit of a work of art!

Try Spatch.. it think there is a tutorial somewhere on modelling human
heads using Spatch... after that use povray to render them!

And since you have posted this in newusers... I would guess you are a new
user. Try using blobman first!

Poser is a commercial package but I saw an older version of Poser on a
coverdisk!

Not anything. For some things it has to use only approximations (eg. NURBS).

What exactly are NURBS? A question I always wanted to ask!

NURBS would be a primitive, not a physical object...I doubt there are
many objects POV could not render models of, as long as those models are
in a format it can use(triangles, isosurfaces, etc).

Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines.

They sort of do for 3d surfaces what Bezier Curves do for 2d lines. The
NURBS surface has a number of control points to which it is attracted,
and the control points can have different strengths (hence the "non-
uniform"). The higher the strength, the more the surface is attracted to
the control point and the more sharply it bends.

In a graphical modelling program, manipulating the control points can be
a bit like moulding modelling clay.

So what would be an example of a NURBS modeller (freeware so that I can
download it and try it now!)?
