I'm working for a few weeks now with povray 3.1 and it seems to be
really good. But I do not know exact: Is this version really the newest
one ? If you look at povray.org most links are from the years 1995 or
1996 and it is for windows 3.1. There are even links to meshes from
airplanes, cars .. but as I see not for povray but for 3dstudio. Is
there still a development for povray or is povray perhaps used in
another (actual, freeware) raytracer ? Or Perhaps with another GUI ? And
I have to admitt: I have problems with the "command-line". All this
makes me feel, that my version perhaps is not the actual one.
Nevertheless: povray produces great pictures !!!

ps: the reason I ask is: I invest some time beside my daily work into
povray and I don't want to invest it into an old version :-)

The latest version (as I know it...) is 3.1g

The next (3.5 !) is expected when it will be ready.
(Only the Pov-Team know).

You may invest also in SuperPatch... a new version is also expected

That's like asking "is a Ferrari used in a Mercedes?". It doesn't make too
much sense.

If you get the POV-Ray for Windows v3.1g you'll be as up-to-date as anyone
concerning the official program.
It's in continuous development as is the case with most programs which are
still alive and kicking.
So long as you aren't using the older 3.02 version you'll be fine for a
while longer. The POV-Team has made some changes in the past which make
some features obsolete while adding still other new features as well. It's
always been noted in the Doc and also in the message stream you see when
parsing a scene file if using a keyword that is experimental.
You don't sound interested in keeping track of many differences but the
SuperPatch, among others, can be a kind of preview of what's to come for the
official versions down the road (however no gaurantees).

SuperPatch and UVPov are the hot items these days, but there are many others
out there.

I use 3.1g for win95, I don't have trouble with comand line
options, I've added any ragularly used options to the
quickres.ini file and select that option with the mouse
before clicking on "Run" to render.

You can also set up icons on your desktop that can have
certain command line options built into them.

If you have any specific questions about command line
options and setting them up for easy/quick use, post here
and I'm sure that you'll get all the help that you need, but
do check the documentation first, it's available in a few
different formats from:

Actually the easiest way to set command line options in winpov is pressing
alt-c and typing them in the command-line-options-field.

Hmm, if you are looking at some of the older link pages, yes you can find
links to pages that old. This of course does not go for
www.povray.org/links/ which is very new.
As for POV-Ray itself, if you look at the FTP server you can see the actual
date when the archive (for the Win version) has been up dated: "Tue Jul 6
23:54:00 1999" (see below). If you look into the documentation (not
somewhere at the end, at the *top*), you will find that it has last been
updated "May 1999". Besides that, doesn't the splash screen say something
like "Copyright 1999"?

And if you are refering to a Windows 3.1 version of POV-Ray, yes, the last
Windows GUI version of POV-Ray that supports WIndows 3.1 is POV-Ray 3.02.

Are you sure you are looking at pages still linked on http://www.povray.org?
:-) Some search engines turn up some 'very old' pages on povray.org, like
the 1998 betatest of POV-Ray 3.1...

At ftp://ftp.povray.org/pub/povray/Official/Windows/ you will find:

Current directory is /pub/povray/Official/Windows

Additionally, you may want to check out the NG
povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions.
The post "Changes between POV-Ray v3.1 and v3.1g" explains all changes up
the the most recent version since the first release of POV-Ray 3.1 a bit
over a year ago.
You may also want to read "POV-Ray plans for v3.1 and beyond..." (notice
that this article is far down in the NG as it has been posted in Feb. 99).
It explains in detail what is ahead regardiung future development.

I saw those dates, but I'm a new user and I was not sure, if the program
itself also is actual. In our company we use a cad-system which also is
"actual" (with new date, we even pay license) but was not developped the
last years and it will die the next time.

I just looked some minutes ago where I found them, but I'm sorry: I
didn't find them again :-)
