I'm fishing for ideas about writing a macro to create cobblestone patterns like
the one in the following picture:
http://cosmicadventure.com/gallery/albums/album42/Cobblestone_design.jpg
perhaps with mathematical variations.
The color of a stone might be determined based on radial distance and angle, and
the pattern could be sub-divided into rings, with each ring using a different
pattern...
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

If you check around in the object collection, you'll find a cobblestone
laying macro. There is also at least one brick macro.
Using those or variations of those, it's possible to create interesting
patterns.

While not exactly what you are asking for (since it requires that the
bricks themselves be of specific shapes, rather than a single shape), have
you considered Penrose tiles? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penrose_tiling)

Penrose tiles are a nice effect, but I'm mostly interested in cobbles at the
moment.

A good starting point is the Curved Paving Macro
