Maybe it means he didn't really do what he claims to have done, and he's
  now trying to cover it up. Unless he's figured out a way to
disassemble the binary. There are ways to do that, I've heard, but they
aren't pretty or even complete.

There's no need to apply the patch, since the exe comes pre-patched.
(Though, it's the 3.6 version of the exe, not the 3.7 beta.)

  You said that you tested it with the beta version.

Well, I copied the exe into the same directory and ran it.

  Exactly what did you expect to achieve with that?

I expected to be able to render meshes with subdivision.

Looking at the contents of the source file, that wouldn't actually
achieve what you're doing, because the pvenginesub.exe is a full
compilation of POVray with a few source-level patches applied. It
doesn't patch the binary as near as I can tell.

The Unix tar.gz includes a handful of source files, but doesn't include
anything else.

Yet, it did...

Only when compiled in with the rest of the POV-ray source. Those files
by themselves *cannot* be used to build an executable - for one thing,
there's no main() function.
