I'd try the image_map route first, personally, because if that's 
satisfactory it'll be easy for you to churn out many many more very 
quickly without any hassle.  And it renders fast.

I've now done a quick write up of this method and added it to my holes
tutorial.

The speed turns out to be quite good, but the bubbles tend to cast
unrealistic white anti-shadows, so I suggest using no-shadow on them.

  Perhaps you should try it with photons to see if there's any considerable
difference? Perhaps as an addition to that page?
