Hi(gh)!

After not generally giving up using the Internet (but restraining
aimless surfing) I plan to rework my web presence, this time more
focusing on my raytracing, i. e. POV-Ray projects. Perhaps some of you
around remember my solemn announcement of POVEarth posted here seven
years ago (on September 11, 2005)...

This project is slowly developing and in fact is intended to become a
multi-user project where POVers around the world may contribute their
renderings and scene code of their homes, their home towns or even their
entire home countries to be worked into one huge elaborate contingent
model of our planet.

To make this project easily recognizable on the Web, I would devote an
own WWW domain to it, such as www.povearth.org. Now there arises the
trademark problem - as I am not a member of the POV-Ray development
team, this needs to be negotiated with the owner(s) of the POV-Ray
trademark.

Is there any chance to get permission to use "pov" as part of a domain name?

See you in Khyberspace!

Yadgar

Quote from the source code license:

"This is a binding legal agreement between you and Persistence of Vision
Raytracer Pty. Ltd. ACN 105 891 870 ("POV"), a company incorporated in
the state of Victoria, Australia, for the product known as the
"Persistence of Vision Raytracer(tm)", also referred to herein as
"POV-Ray(tm)". [...]"

Quiz: Reading this piece of legalese carefully...

(1) Whom do you need to contact for permission to use the term
"POV-Ray(tm)"?

(2) Whom do you need to contact for permission to use the acronym "POV"?

BTW, I can have misunderstood something - as ever - but I learned that one can
register new master-domain names nowadays. Has someone thought about the idea to
register .pov (like .org, .edu or .de) to Persistence of Vision Raytracer Pty.
Ltd.?

Best regards,
Michael

you have the money ? The first call is over (but undecided yet, IIRC),
and it was rather a big amount to provision (not $10 buy).

Just start your website and wait untillt someone pursues you. Did the the same
on my work, it was my standard answer if someone said "I will complain to your
boss", "gladly I am curious who it is"

The person to ask would be Chris Cason; he's the project coordinator and
as I recall, the owner for all the sites. If he's not the person to ask,
he would know who is. :)

Certainly not. Sorry, I was not aware about this special detail. I only learned
about the possibility, not the pricing. So better forget about this proposal.

Best regards,
Michael
