Since the POV-Ray team is hurting so much for disk space, maybe we
should close some of the groups? Maybe off-topic?

Doesn't seem to me that they're hurting for space, just asking that you
preview and review so you're not creating unnecessary revisions of
documents in the wiki. At least that's my read of those two comments
from Jim H (the other Jim H, that is).
That seems a reasonable request to me.

As far as I can see, disk space has never been mentioned in that
discussion. There are more reasons than just disk space to ask that you
keep the number of Wiki page revisions low; for instance it reduces the
effort needed to review changes. So be a good boy and make Jim's life
easier, okay? Operating the "preview" button is really simple, and I
promise it won't bite you.

I suspected as much. :-)
BTW, thank you for taking on the wiki! I'm sure it's taking a fair bit
of your free time. I had really hoped to be able to continue working
with it, but things just got too busy for me (and I should've said
something sooner).

Bit bites are nasty, though.... :-)

That was the reason that was implied, yes: "Each time you save a file
you create an entirely new document in the database. Granted it's
generally text and low-ish overhead..."

Not mentioned anywhere.

I suppose we didn't anticipate the need to mention something that we
considered to be common sense.

Wikis don't take much space, and 10kb of text (for a large page) is
really not much in the database after all. But when you have someone who
doesn't use the preview button and ends up committing 59 revisions in
which they change one word each time, it can add up. It also clutters
the Recent Changes page, making it harder for the moderators to see what
has really been changed.
I'm a sysop on a wiki for a game mod, and I can tell you from personal
experience that it gets very irritating to look at the changes list and
see that one page was edited 37 times within 10 minutes by the same
person (real example). We're also having problems with people not
knowing how to use the Comment field, and ending up with hundreds of
edits with no description that require manually viewing the diff.
Sorry, not really contributing here, just an anecdote.
Chris
