As per the discussion in Advanced Users, lots of GeoCities pages will
soon be lost. I was wondering if it would be worth it to create an
effort to contact authors of Povray pages to either 1) move their site
somewhere else, or 2) submit their work to the Object Collection.
I know that GeoGebra has a special area where users can upload documents
and create web pages describing their usage.

That's a good idea. Although it is not on Geocities I could not download Nathan
Kopps' Lens Flare, last night. Yet another utility lost.
The PovRay resource links could do with being updated. Where is uncle Ken?

Yes indeed! And what about that *historical* page by Chris Colefax for
example on GeoCities? It would be sad and wrong to lose that one...

I've been giving this some thought. Here's what I'd suggest we do:
I've generated a list from Google of pages on the geocities.com domain that
refer to povray and posted it at
http://povhouse.freewebsites.com/geocities_sites.html
A lot just contain links to povray.org or just mention POV-Ray in passing.
I've got about half way through a 'first-pass' to try and pick out which
ones
contain potentially interesting material. My guess is that, at the end of
this first pass, there's likely to be around 40-50 pages of interest, from
probably about 15-20 authors. (Any help with completing this little exercise
would be most welcomed).
Google suppresses some valid results (even when you tell it not to), so if
you think the list is missing any interesting geocities sites or if you
think I've overlooked any good stuff on the sites where I've marked the
'Action required' field as 'None' then let me know. Otherwise we can
probably quickly focus efforts on quite a small number of authors:
Include files/ Macros etc

As Thomas mentions there's quite a lot from Chris Colefax. Anyone know if
he's still around?
There are a few other object and macro sites by various authors.
Would anyone like to investigate to see if these sites already give
permission that would cover redistribution or whether they can
track down authors to get permission to 'save' their
work?
I'd be happy to put in some time adapting stuff to satisfy the Object
Collection naming standards if the author is willing to let us put work on
the Object Collection on a CC-LGPL license.
Advice & Tutorials

It might be good to capture some of this sort of stuff on the Wiki
(subject to permissions from the author)
Would anyone like to pursue that?
Galleries

There are some nice little galleries of images. It may be possible to
contact authors just to make them aware of the impending closure and see if
they want to move their work to alternative free web sites.
Anyone want to take on the task of contacting people to check that they know
what's happening?

I guess I should mention that I've also looked into this .... well kind of!
My take was from the stale content perspective. Chris Cason and I talked
about getting the links/resources content posted on the Wiki so that it can
more easily be updated, then have the main POV site pull changes from there.
I've not started anything yet but if it would help I'll bump this up in my
to do list, so we can have a place to get the changes identified and made.

Is there anything in the zip that authorises redistribution?
Otherwise you could try contacting the author to see if he'd by ok with it
being put out on a CC-LGPL license (ie if he's ok with royalty free
redistribution for both private and commercial purposes).

Keep hold of it. I must have a copy somewhere but defiantly not to hand.
I managed to get Chris Colefax's to work but I used Nathan's before and was
familiar with it.
