I guess that any high-end package can do what you plan to do. However, there 
are two things to keep in mind:
- these packages are very comprehensive and the learning curve is steep; 
animation, particularly, is tough.
- commercial plug-ins are often necessary in addition to the basic package

Take a very good look at SoftimageXSI. For $495 you get foundation with
MentalRay built in. XSI outputs obj files for poseray to convert to povray.
XSI has the best subdivision system in any program I have used. This is the
program I went with when I had this same need.

Wow, excellent review.

My major need is a good physics modeler so that I can show a Tank pushing 
through a steel door, realistically.  It's a high point of the movie.  Have 
you messed around much with physics plugins?

I believe there's one built into Max and the student discount is pretty 
good, 800 something if I remember right.
