Absolutely - those that come with the documentation.
As for learning the SDL, I would recommend you make a "wish-list" of things
you don't know how to (or know that you cannot) do, and then start poking
around the docs (and this NG) looking for possible solutions and/or
work-arounds. Oh, and feel free to use things where they weren't intended;
it makes life interesting :)

Are you using POV just to give them a better understanding of what's involved in
RT or as a serious graphics tool? I assume the former.
If so, I'd have thought sticking with fairly basic CSG would be the way to go
(unions, differences and intersections of primatives).
Using the SDL to do things like create multiple copies of objects and so on
would be a good intro to the programming side.
And, of course, a quick tour of Gilles Tran's site, just in case any of them are
in doubt as to whether POV can produce "serious" graphics....
