When posting images and animations some people write the size of the
attached files in the subject line and other people don't.

Are there some people who can't see the file sizes directly?

If there's a good reason to write it in the subject line, maybe I should
start doing it, but if there's not, I'd rather not.

The News Server Acceptable Use Policy doesn't seem to mention anything about
this...

I've always done this as a common courtesy. Particularly in the animations
section this is good etiquette? But then I don't always follow through with
it and it isn't accurate with IE's OE.

Some news readers don't display file sizes. At least, Netscape doesn't, unless
it's a feature I've disabled.

Before I was on un-metered internet access, I was more particular about what
I downloaded. I generally configured my news-reader to download headers
only, and would go off-line and from the brief text in the subject line
would decide whether to mark the message for download or not.

Knowing the size of attachments before downloading the body I found helpful,
and the news reader I used then would only tell me the size of the
attachment after it was downloaded.

I'm not sure if O.E. will give this information or not prior to downloading
the body, but for the sake of a couple of keystrokes I try to be courteous
and put the size there for anyone else who might still pay for their
internet connection by the minute, and would like to know how big it is
before they download it.

These days I don't pay by the minute, so it doesn't make any difference to
me, I download them all.

Was there any particular reason that you would rather not put the size in
the subject line ?

Regards

There's a 1mb limit anyhow so it doesn't matter that much but I will
say that I'm more likely to download an animation if I see that it's
a smaller one. As other's mentioned netscape doesn't show the file
size so unless it's listed in the subject I have no way of knowing
and sometimes skip over it.

OE will tell you the size in KB.
Netscape will tell you the size in lines (pretty meaningless)
XNews will tell you the size in lines
Opera appears to use lines (I can't be sure because it doesn't label that
column)

It seems a good idea that does no harm.

Thanks for the replies!

I do pay a lot for my online minutes myself, and it happens often that I
don't download messages that are too big.

But since I'm using OE, I can automatically see the sizes of all messages in
KB. I asked mainly because I didn't know how common it is not to be able to
see this.

I understand now that many people cannot automatically see the sizes, so I
will try to remember to write the size in the subject line when I post
attached files in the future.

but what you can do is compare the number of lines that an unknown
message has with the lines in a message with a given size. just make
the lines count visible in your header summary by clicking the arrow in
the top right of that window. you still won't have an exact number
until you download, but it will give you a good idea of how long you'll
have to wait. :)

I wasn't sure this worked but I just checked and it does. It may not give a
100% accurate reading but it will certainly tell you what size category the
message falls into and approximately how long it will take to download.

Now I don't want to get off on a rant here, but:

- The size posted in the message subject is almost always wrong, since
people quote the binary size and ASCII encoding bumps it by about 30%.

- The follow-up messages all have the original posting size in the subject
even though they are usually much smaller, potentially causing some
confusion.

- Sharing multimedia is a high-bandwidth endeavour, regardless of whether
you download music, photos, animation, or other content. If you download a
lot of large files/messages you should consider getting an appropriate
connection, ISP, and rate plan.

- POV people have generally been good about reducing there work to the
smallest size (maximum compression) that still allows the image to be viewed
and enjoyed. Some don't, but they tend to get nasty follow-up messages.

- If appending the file size becomes the norm and somebody forgets he will
be reprimanded (like those who include binary attachments in non-binary
groups or post in HTML format) and I would prefer to keep the number of
rules that generate negative postings to a minimum. We get enough already.

And my (elitist, unpopular) conclusion:

Adding the binary image size to the subject line adds little value and
should therefore be considered completely discretionary.

Of course that's just my opinion.
I could be wrong.
