I like surfing on all the many interesting POV-Ray related websites around,
but I don't do it much since I never know when there's something new on the
different websites. Browsing through lots of pages regularly just to find
that 95% have not been updated since last time I checked is not very fun...

So I encourage web authors to make available services to which visitors can
subscribe, so they'll get an e-mail at major updates of the site. Another
nice thing is a "what's new" list which shortly states the latest updates on
the site, so one know what to look for.

I'd gladly subscribe to many such services if I had the option. I also think
it's a good method for web authors to get more traffic on their sites, and
who wouldn't like that?

For examples of what I mean you can visit my own website
(http://rsj.mobilixnet.dk), and I know Lance Birch provides these services
too on his website (http://come.to/the.zone), as well as Chris Colefax
(http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lakes/1434/).

You can use the netmind service (http://www.netmind.com/) to do this
on any website.

I have added two simple e-mail links to my site and I will create a mailing list
the old fashioned way. It's a good idea, and I don't see any good reason why I
haven't done it yet ; )

I have a 'last updated [date]' on my page, but i don't manage to change
this every time i add something. I will think about adding a change
history.

As Lutz mentioned you can also use netmind, but they send advertisement
mails even if nothing has changed on the monitored page, furthermore i
don't know if it only works for single pages or whole websites.

I have had a email notification on the PRSG and only one guy signed up for
it. What I think would be nice, is if the new POV Ray webring had a listing
of last updates for member pages. Maybe this can be done on the List section
of the webring sorting by most recent updates. This would make it much
easier to find the pages that are being updated for everyone.

Opinions?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand that sentence.
Care to explain what you're talking about?

Hmm, don't know that one. How does it work?

I use ByteCenter myself. ( http://www.bytecenter.com/ )
It works this way. I have a form on my website where people can submit their
e-mail.
There's no limitations to the design of this form. The form call a script at
ByteCenter which forwards the submitted data to me.
Then I put all the addresses in the BCC field when sending out news per
e-mail.

There's no ads or anything. The only disadvantage is that user has to
confirm the data-transmission on a warning page before it's send. This is so
people can't use the service to get peoples' credit card numbers and the
like. You have no control over the look of the warning page, but it looks
rather neutral with no ads or anything.

Basically I think ByteCenter offers a very good service.
