the codemax editor and they panic :)
Isn't renderman a similar program? That is, it doesn't have a modeller
of its own, but it's just a renderer taking text input?
Still, renderman is considered a professional program.

Strictly speaking RenderMan is not program, is is interface
specification. Pixar uses PRMan program (PhotoRealistic RenderMan, IIRC)
which is "scanline" renderer (it uses Reyes algorithm) , conforming to
the RenderMan interface. BMRT is RenderMan compliant raytracer, then
there is number of other programs, which conform to RenderMan interface.
And AFAIK, PRMan does not have modeller, it uses files, which are
generated by other programs. BMRT is same: it does not have modeller,
instead there is command-line program, which takes RIB file and outputs
image.
But there is number of modellers, which support RIB files (RenderMan
Interface Bytestream Protocol files) or have "direct" (plugins and such)
support for RenderMan compatible renderers.
Professional means, that renderer is capable of handling huge amount of
data (typical Pixar _compressed_ RIB file for one image is 0.5-2 GB +
texture files!) and rendering it within reasonable time. In this regard
PRMan and POV-Ray play in totally different leagues...

Renderman is more than a spec for the RIB format, though: it's primarily an
API spec, so programs can call the renderer directly.

It was Computer Arts that introduced me to povray. There was a user gallery piece
where someone had submitted some rather uninspiring art--something like a metallic
bridge with all the wrong colors. But it mentioned this freeware raytracer and gave
the link to povray.org. This was perhaps 3 years ago.
Of course, they ARE in bed with the big buck software companies. You won't find
many indications of what freeware can do to compete with their advertisers' stuff.
I stopped buying them when the "full software, POW! distribution of Organica"
turned out to be a save-disabled demo. Lyingbrits...

Pixar's RenderMan is also just a renderer, but otherwise I think it is quite
different from POV, with a different design goal. AFAIK it is a scanline
renderer (although it can use the BMRT raytracer as a "ray server"). Also it has
a relatively low-level scene description language and as such is more of a "pure
renderer" which is really not meant to be used without an external modellel.
Of course the fact that most high-end modelling tools support it doesn't hurt,
either...
