Pixar's RenderMan is also just a renderer, but otherwise I think it is quite
different from POV, with a different design goal. AFAIK it is a scanline
renderer (although it can use the BMRT raytracer as a "ray server"). Also it has
a relatively low-level scene description language and as such is more of a "pure
renderer" which is really not meant to be used without an external modellel.
Of course the fact that most high-end modelling tools support it doesn't hurt,
either...
