whenever I run pkgtool to install the povlinux.tgz, I get an error
saying:
tar (grandchild): read error on -: Input/output error
tar (grandchild): at beginning of tape, quitting now
tar (grandchild): error is not recoverable: exiting now
gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file

Anyone got any ideas?

try:

$ tar -xzvf povlinux.tgz

If you still get the error message I'd suggest that your download
is corrupted, so d/l the file again (but delete the old one first).

If I can read your message does it mean thet your PGP stuff isn't
working? What's the point if you're posting in a public place
anyway?

The files on the server are known to be OK. You probably have some proxy
server or another local cached copy or you simply have a bad connection.
What are you using to download the file? Try using ftp to download; the ftp
server is at <ftp://ftp.povray.org/pub/povray/Official/Linux/>.

Also, please do not post attachments in this group (simply cancel your
previous post).
You may want to read the povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions post
"Welcome To the POV-Ray News Groups" which explains where you may post
attachments and where not.

Don't run pkgtool. Do it by hand.

This doesn't make sense with a good download. If you have a proxy or
caching, bypass it or forbid caching. If you do not, try downloading
it through ftp.

Once you have a working archive, copy it to a temp directory and
extract it with tar -zxf and look for any README or Install or some
other file with an obvious name.

Yes, I saw that, but to me it looks like it was simply copy and
pasted into the body of the message. Netscape is generally very
good about identifying attachments and in this case none were
present of identified as such.
