Ooops. I had a 50/50 chance of getting that one right anyway :)

Nope, this is a point that had not been made clear in the list of
features...

There will *not* be JPEG output, only reading of JPEG files will be allowed.
This is by design and it is unlikely POV-Ray will ever support JPEG as
output format because it is not lossless.

I repent.

: Can you change the output file format in pov from a *.bmp to a *.jpg or
: *.gif with out haveign to use another program to do that ???

Believe me: You don't want that.

Not in the long run anyways.

Hmm, isn't there a JPEG-2000 standard which supports lossless
compression? I remember reading something about it, but I haven't seen
anything that can read or write them.

Exactly, libjpeg doesn't support it, and there is no information if it ever
will...

To be frank, I've never felt this was a really good reason. After all, there
are already an infinite number of ways this kind of thing can happen (like
this one : launch a 48-hours long batch rendering with "Continue" enabled and
find that nothing happened because small test renders had been already
created...).
Also, JPG could be implemented like some sort of post processing.
post_process{jpeg_output{quality, keep_original}}
JPG output support is certainly not on my priority list, but when doing lots
of test renders (and when one wants to keep the results for comparison or
historical purposes) it would be an interesting feature.

You can do that with the Post_Scene_Command.

I had heard rumblings also that it might contain non-free IP (ala GIF patented
compression)
