Objects are solid clear acrylic with an ior of 1.0

That depends on whether you were, just then, working out an animation on the
subject. :)

I think it has something to do with the ior of the air/flame.

But if not clear and you don't take a light with you it'll appear to be
solid. In fact, even if semi-transparent you would see everything as the
pigment of the object around you; unless there is a pattern to suggest
otherwise.

Nope, because if it's semi-transparent light will go through the surface
and shade the interior.

Misconception: With povray 3.1g, you can make your own spotlight form
scratch. All you need is a light source located at the focus of a parabolic
mirror.
When I first got CorelDream3D, and perhaps also later with pov, I cursed the
coders that I couldn't get this to work. With CD3D, I spent probably a dozen
hours trying to get this to work. The problem, of course, is that I didn't
understand the basest concept of how a raytracer worked: I insisted that
reflective surfaces should reflect lights! This will work to some degree,
perhaps, with photons in MegaPov. But the new user might not understand this
concept.
Didn't think I saw this in your list....................

After I discarded my spotlight project in CD3D, I proceeded to try to make
caustics shine on the backs of dolphins in an underwater scene. I of course
chose the most logical method: putting an undulating surface which was
transparent but highly refractive between my light source and dolphins..........
