I don't know anything about it, but I thought I would just toss out an Idea.

If you increased a parameter over (clock) could you make an animation of an
avalanche or landslide?

Texture-wise surely so I'd say.  I'm currently doing snow-melt and
vegetation changes, although leaving the rock and dirt in place.  All just
surface texturing but it's better than nothing.  Simply done by shifting the
index values up and down in the slope map using clock as a multiplier of
decimal numbers.

In principle, I believe you could. But you might have trouble localizing the
avalanche to only one part of the mountain, instead of all around it.

Not necessarilly. Using cylindrical, for example, or spherical, and puting
the sloping inside that could localize the effect. Right?

I didn't believe so, but yes.  I just tried it.  Doesn't seem to be a
problem to map slope dependant textures even though they already consist of
a map.  Thought the "patterned textures cannot be layered" error would
occur.  Good thing then.
