New Orleans, the last week in July. Anybody else going to be there?
Alas, looking at the map, I don't see any users in Louisiana.

My realistic dream is to go some day as a tourist.
My farfetched dream is to go some day as a professional, or with
something people are interested in.

Is there any room for tourists/hobbyists at such a conference?????

It is open to anyone willing to pay the admission fees.

No, but I'll be at the National Plastics Exposition in Chicago this weekend.
I'm sure you're all jealous.

That reminds me of ExpoOficina 98 here in Panama. There was a whole section
devoted to the latest in plastic pipes and obstruction detection with lasers
and stuff. Really "fascinating"... i.e. I was going "uh-huh, uh-huh", while
slowly inching away from the man who started explaining things to me. :)

Exhibits Plus category, postmarked on or before June 16 (this coming
Friday): $40 (USD). Details at
http://www.siggraph.org/s2000/registration/categories.html, but there's
plenty of touristy stuff involved at that level. Hobbyists (I sure
don't make a living at this) who are sufficiently interested may even
consider the Full Conference category, but be prepared for a lot of
math. I ran into a friend of mine there last year, an artist who didn't
have a very strong math background. I'm not sure he's going to bother
with Full Conference this year. He's also not a student any more
(students get a nice price break on actual conference attendance), but
having graduated, he's going to be there looking for work. Lots of
people interested in finding work as animators show up with demo tapes.
Overall, SIGGRAPH is a lively mix of pimply geek programmers and hip art
scene types (I'm the former, in case you hadn't figured it out).

That's me all over :-)
For the price of the Full Conference I could probably vacation in Europe
(meaningless to some of you I'm sure).
New Orleans is certain to be hot and humid, unpleasant only if you leave the
building(s) maybe but you'd have to some time.
I'll have to think fast here if I want to get around 300 miles of gas money
out of the savings from the after-16th of June admission price. It's about
800 miles round trip for me. Think the SIGGRAPH 2001 is going to be in New
York and I'd like to go there sometime too. Wait and see though, it'll be
slated for February probably. ha ha ha

I've been to New York. If I had to choose between New York and a vacation
in Europe I think I would take my chances with Europe.

I'm planning on taking a bus rather than flying, in order to save
money. A bus from Wisconsin to Louisiana isn't too long a trip.

From http://www.siggraph.org/calendar/calendar.html:

SIGGRAPH 2001: Los Angeles, California
SIGGRAPH 2002: San Antonio, Texas
SIGGRAPH 2003: San Diego, California

This year: New Orleans, Louisiana
Last year: Los Angeles, California
The year before: Orlando, Florida

Always in July or August, and always someplace hot. :-P
Maybe the facility rental is cheaper then...

San Diego is generaly cool and temperate. Might be a good year to
attend. Only an hour and a half drive for me :)
