I get syntax errors rendering the default POVRay files.
Why is this ?
Take matches.pov.
In this section it gives me a syntax error:
// Some haze to make the flame light sources glow
#declare Atmosphere1 = atmosphere {
type 4
samples 30
distance 500
scattering 0.1
aa_level 8
aa_threshold 0.1
jitter 0.1
}
The error accors in the #declare line at the atsmosphere { point.
It gives me an error "Cannot assign uninitialized identifier"
I am using Povray 3.1.g.watcom.win32 (Pentium II optimized) version.
I do not understand why the default demos would not work with POVRay.
Can anyone help me with this beginners question ?
I 'd really like to print them in full colour on photo paper (PS 1000).
Some POV files work (Pacman and Pawns are great !!!).

Hi, Filiep. See the message thread, "Subject: Atm0sphere vs. Media
Method 3", posted by Ken Tyler on 02-Apr-2000 in p.binaries.images. Ken
deals with the very scene you are referring to.

It sounds to me like you are trying to render POV-Ray v3.0 example scene
files with POV-Ray v3.1. The atmosphere and halo feature have been
discontinued in POV-Ray v3.1 and the matches.pov file will only work with
v3.0. The version directive in this particular situation will not help
because all backward compatiblity for those features have been dropped.
I recently updated the matches.pov file to work with the new media
feature in POV-Ray v3.1. If you would like me to send you a copy
let me know. The results are not 100% identical but close enough
for jazz. Other scenes from v3.0 may no longer be available however
and it's the price we pay for added or better features in the program.
If you want to render the example scenes be sure you use the scenes
that were distributed with the v3.1 package or you run the risk of
having to go through the ones that no longer work and upgrading them
to comply with syntax/feature changes that come in later versions.

I should add the I used features from a custom version of POV-Ray that
are not available in POV-Ray v3.1. The file should still work with a
couple of minor modifications in the official version but the render
time is likely to take longer. I can make the necessary changes for
you if you wish.

Can I still find the old versions of PovRay somewhere ?
I just bought a new colour printer and some of the images from previous
competitions seem georgeous.
I 'd like to render them at very high resolutions and different aspect
ratios than the ones available.
