My video editor has the following compression methods for AVI's; which is
generally useful in the p.b.a.-group? I am not sure that the one I used in
my first post is commonly used (MP4 V2):
- Cinepak Codec by Radius
- Intel Indeo Video 4.3
- Intel Indeo Video R3.2
- Microsoft Video 1
- Microsoft RLE
- Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
- Indeo Video 5.04
- Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V1
- Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec V2

Just about everyone should have the first 3 above and most will have the
last two as well. The others you have listed I do not have on my system.

I would go with H.263 for my personal use (but I normally just use
uncompressed AVI and then MPG them). I suggest you go with the latest Indeo.

Of what you have installed, I'd use Indeo 5.04 (Codec ID "IV50") at
setings Quality:9000 and bytes/sec 32768 or 65536

This is odd because I don't have either of those two Mpeg-4 codecs showing
here and yet something did download to play that file at p.b.a. Wonder why
I can't list it here? I've restarted computer since then. Well, I know
it's there anyhow.
I checked all my Avi codecs against each other once for quality and
filesize, unfortunately I didn't take note of the results, think it was
Indeo 5.* which came up best of what I had at the time (it's v. 5.06 now),
so like Peter says that might be good and others should typically have it
too. Thing is, I don't know if a version change alone messes up backward
compatibility or not. I also have the Indeo interactive codec which I never
use because it seems others don't usually have that at all.
It's not going to be a sure thing anyhow.

I think what Tony was implying is that you create an AVI then convert
that to an Mpeg movie. I don't know what if any advantage there is in
a two step process but he may be able to enlighten us on that subject.
Look around here http://www.povray.org/links/3D_Animation_Utilities/
for tools to convert from avi2mpg or to make mpeg files directly from
you images.

But if you're making an MPEG animation why wrap it up in an AVI?
