Sorry, I've expressed myself unclear.

I won't include information about street, street number, and phone number in
the form at all.
The reason I asked for whole address formats was just so I could increase my
knowledge about how addresses and thus locations are written in different
parts of the world.

Also, The user don't have to include their real name, but can write a nick
name, initials, or anything they want.

However, I think e-mail address should be obligatory, but then *all* other
fields should be optional. What do you think of that? To avoid spam it could
be written like: user "at" provider.com
Wouldn't that work?

So, I still think the following fields would be sufficient for describing
locations:

Country,
Nearest major city,
Postal district,
Postal code/zip code,
latitude and longitude.

But maybe a field "town" should be added so one could be more detailed than
"nearest major city" but less detailed than "zip code/postal code" and
"postal district".

There could also be a "state" field for people living in the USA only.

Keep in mind that all fields should be optional.

Please keep the discussion going!

Greetings,

Rune S. Johansen

With Lat/Lon provided you really need nothing else of the more refined
place names/numbers anyhow. Country, State or Province (whatever the
major subcategory is), nearest town or city should be adequate then.
Duplicate town names might exist within a certain region but with Lat
and Lon it's clear as to where each is. County and district type thing
has been suggested but it's a matter of common person to person
description whereas the numerical things are more of a computer input
I guess you could say.
Concentration on the web page which people might have, email
addresses, and a biography (birthdate/birthplace/family/job/hobbies)
seems a priority after Lat/Lon and place names as has been said.
Using non-direct emails doesn't sound too good. If you can click on a
email link on anyones web page then why not also there too.
Can you manage a web page having editable entries which then get
posted up as they change? Not sure if that means having a cgi or java
to be able to do that if so.
Well, you asked to keep talking ; )
