Greetings,
I am having difficulty understanding the different spelling and meaning
of the following words and am seeking someone who can advise me on the
correct spelling and usage of each:
Modeling
Modelling
Modeler
Modeller
Examples of their use that I am interested in are:
This program is a full featured modelling environment.
This modeller offers many features for use with povray.
or should it be
This program is a full featured modeling environment.
This modeler offers many features for use with povray.
When is the double "L" spelling used and when should it be avoided.
For the curious I am proof reading my links col(l)ection for spelling errors
and I am unsure which spelling to use for these common program descriptions.
The standard netscape like spell checker is not suitable for establishing
these rules of usage so don't simply pass the words through your spell checker
and send me your corrections. I have already done so and have found ambiguities
in the spelling and use of these words that the spell checker programs do not
account for.
Any help would be appreciated.

model - vb - modeled or modelled; modeling or modelling
vt - 1: to plan or form after a pattern : shape ....
The given noun is modeler, without the alternate spelling.
This seems to suggest that as a verb either spelling is acceptable, but the
single "L" variation is expected. Not having the double "L" spelling for
the noun seems inconsistent, though.
The spell checker of Outlook Express accepts the single "L" but not the
double "L" version.

I've seen Robert's reply, now to fan the flames ;>
According to my Collins ENGLISH Dictionary,
model n.
...
~vb. +els, +elling, +elled or U.S. +els, +eling, +eled.
...
_ modeller n.
So the correct forms are model, modeller, models, modelling, modelled.
Cheers, PoD.

Thanks guys. I think I will go with the double "L" spelling and to those
who might complain can simply learn to live with it ;~}

Unlike Robert's Outlook Express, my own OE only accepts modelling/modeller
(with double Ls). From the timezone information I'm guessing he's in the
USA, so probably using a US English spellchecker. As I'm in the UK, I'm
using a British English spellchecker.
From this I'd assume the difference in spelling is a difference between US
and UK English, with the single "L" being US and the double "L" being UK.
Since POVRay accepts both, I think it's fair enough if we do too ;)

Should have known this was another American corruption of the language.
Wouldn't have bothered with my reply.

Don't sell yourself short. Your reply helped me in my decision to comply
with the double "L" spelling because I too could not see why a single
"L" was appropriate.
Thanks everyone,

Thou art sincere in thy regret. My apologies for the grievous harm thou hath
endured for my country's faults to your most noble and honourable language.
Take thou what course thou wilt.
