I found this on a site, while looking for those voxel clouds mentioned
above.
http://freespace.virgin.net/hugo.elias/models/m_landsp.htm
I know nothing abut the POV code, so i could never do it, but it seems
to be a very simple process, with great results!
Anyone care to give it a try?

Tried it last weekend with random sphere / plane intersections and scaling. Ran
out of memory within 100 steps.

I made a macro to do that. After a few iterations, the render time gets
unbearably slow. It is useless for POV, unless a mesh can be made
instead of using CSG.

For a realistic planet near you (ie Earth), please see my
announcement here 18 July 1999:
Free Earth Digital Elevation Data (for heightfields)

I have been working with POV Superpatch isosurfaces. From some
code that I picked up in the news groups here and have had some success
getting good-looking planets. I have the code as a macro file. If
your interested, post here. I have been having e-mail problems
so I would probably post that in povray.binaries.scene-files.

Advanced means constantly wondering where reality gets its processing
power.
