(Just noticed this - hence the late post.)

According to Cinefex #77, the sandstorm effects in The Mummy were simulated
in Maya (done by a bloke called Mike Ludlam) and then rendered using ILM's
own proprietary particle system software.  The 'bullet-bounces' were
rendered in Maya.

So now you know.
