Don't worry I'm not going to give anything away. I know
some of you won't be able to see it for quite some time,
but I wanted to correct the "bad reviews" The Phantom Menace
has been getting. Those reviews are erroneous! The movie was
good. I think the problem with the press has been that when
they saw Star Wars as kids they loved it and were surprised
by it. Now they are adults, and they watch movies from an
adult point of view. So now when they see The Phantom Menace,
they see silly creatures, fantasy places and magical Jedi that
don't exist in the real world. But it's great stuff if you can
forget about being an adult for 2 1/2 hours.
And besides, the saber fights are awesome!...

I think you are right on in your discussion. It's a serial, and it's
targeted at kids - or rather, the kid in all of us. "Suspension of
disbelief" is easier for some than others ... apparently not easy for
mainstream critics, though.

Just remember, the 'mainstream' critics panned the original Star Wars too
...

I have tickets for Friday, and I expect to do a lot of "I can do
that..." throughou tthe movie. I probably can't but I'll certainly try
to figure out how to do it in POV-Ray.

I remember standing in line for the first one. I was second in line then,
heh. Sci-Fi had no where near the draw then. Now I'll wait till the crowds
thin.
Somehow, "The Mummy" is more interesting to me today. I saw a clip of the
awakening on CNN. Wow! How many of us wish we worked for ILM? :) Just
imagine the computing power!

Just saw Star Wars last night. It's great. The 3d special effects are
great. There were some scenes that I knew had to be 3d but to be honest I
couldn't see any of the tell-tell signs showing that it was 3d. I'm pretty
sure I liked Darth Maul over Darth Vader. The guy just looks like he is
pure evil. The fight scene with him was captivating. Make sure you go see
this one.

It all looked pretty seamless to me, too. Both the Gungan and Battle
Droid forces had me wondering how it was done on such a large scale.
My first thought was motion capture technology and then digitally
removing the real people. Their motions were very natural. I'm
thankful they didn't use Ewoks!
The digital landscapes were beautiful!
I won't discuss some of the more unique heavy weaponry used in the
film for fear of spoiling it for the other members of our group who
will not have the opportunity to see it for themselves until later
this year <sigh>.

I had read that Ray Park (Darth Maul) is highly skilled in martial
arts but it was an amazing thing to see both McGregor (Obi-Wan) and
Neeson (Qui-Gon) perform almost all of their ferocious lightsaber
battles with the Sith Lord. Very intense and believable.
I'm going to see "The Phantom Menace" again on Friday morning.
