Hello. I was looking around on the Internet after checking out the very
useful ShellSelect and I found something called LiteStep. I was
wondering if any of you have tried it, recommend it, and/or if POV-Ray
will work with it. Thanks.

I tried it and although it may be fun for those folk who like to mess around
with their interface, I didn't find any advantage to having it, and it had
some problems which made me decide to go back to Win98.

Sure.. It works lovingly fine together with POV. I've used it for around ... 8
months I think...
If you don't want the hazzle configuring it (No, it's not difficult, but it
needs some work ) I can recommend http://www.evwm.com as well. Its not as
graphic as litestep, but is far smaller than explorer is when it comes to
memory use.

Sure its great. You can make windows anyway you like. Look at:
http://floach.pimpin.net/
There are many other shells if you like messing around with windows.

Have tried it. Love it. It's just a shell replacement. Doesn't interfear
with any programs. I wouldn't recomend you use it on NT.
For configuration try LSCP (litestep control panel) it's available from
www.litestep.ru.ac.za or floach.pimpin.net

I don't mind a little hard work. I just want to know if it is worth the effort. Is
it stable? That's my main concern.

more stable than explorer. My 95 machine used to crash at least
once a day (explorer caused a GPF in .....) With litestep I've run
my machine for 3 days without rebooting and no problems. Additionaly
if explorer crashed the machine had to be rebooted. If litestep crashes
the user can open task manager and restart litestep and the system
carries on.
I've used litestep on 3 different machine for over a year

I don't know litestep, but if what you want is another
Win 9* shell, you might try TCMD (it is shareware, and
search engines will find a ftp site near you).
It saves you from having to mouse around and allows you to
type your commands at a prompt -- just like in a real OS.

mail me. <aside> One of the developers is a good friend and ex-classmate
of mine.
