Agree, agree, agree and perhaps also, yes, agree.
It's a matter of habit as to how I do things. I tend to jump right in to
a message and read or read and reply in one felled swoop. Hardly ever
glancing at the group (or groups, in the case of crossposts) I'm in.
Although I almost always get it right if I'm starting a new message
myself (note the "almost") but then there's the cancellation option if I
notice my mistake in time. Some of the posts others have made go into
very wrong groups, whether by mistake or not. Should be pretty straight
forward about doing this right. Main thing is to get into the habit of
looking before posting and picking appropriate groups to defer too
(toughest thing I'd say) when the message content will change. And a
very good example of this would be the recent POV-Ray Now! button
graphics asked for in povray.general. I followed others who had replied
there binary file and all. Is it still not obvious how stupid I can be?
Well, needless to say that is a very good example of the wrong thing to
do. The common sense thing would have been to separate the sort of
message postings they were into their respective groups. I think there
was even a pov script included with one.

Btw, this was originally going to be a reply to a post by Ken T. at
povray.binaries.images about cleaning up the way message posts were
done. Ken! I may have to yell at you, you almost made me post this in
there instead! I swear, the very last second before I hit the Send
button I noticed where I was and cut the text out for a new message
here.

  The reason I posted my general comments about providing Pov-Ray scene
files, include files, and macro scripts is because a great many people
see something of considerable interest by another person and they are
naturally curious as to how it was accomplished. In the spirit of
Pov-Ray, and just because they are nice people, the originator of the
image in question will take quite a bit of effort to clean up his
messy source file and then post it as was originally requested. He does
so publicly so that all will benefit from his work and it gives one a
feeling of self worth when others ask for a piece of your talent. This
is great. I could not be more pleased about this kind of interactive
behaviour, in such a diverse cross section of humanity, as is present
in these groups. 
  Unfortunately trying to find these pearls of pov artistry can be a
nightmare when posted in the wrong group and buried under 25 layers
of other people comments on the image. I felt that the images group
is the one that is probably more out of control than any other so it
is the one I targeted with my request that we all work together to get
the information posted in the right places. You must remember too that
there will be people coming along a year from now that will want to see
what resources are available here on this server. In all likelihood
they will not go to the images group to find scene file material or
specialized macro functions. Instead they will look where it belongs
and they will miss about 25% of it because it was improperly posted in
the wrong discussion group.

 That is the why and the what of it. I really have no more to say on the
subject except:

 "Only you can prevent forest fires !"

and 

 "Give a hoot ! Don't pollute !".

  This has been a public service announcement brought to you by nobody
in particular on a subject that is probably only of passing interest to
all.

Glad you cleared that up for the folks here, I wasn't about to try and
reword your earlier message or even repost it so I intended just to get
busy on the habit forming of pointers to other posts.
What would really be great, and I'm sure this has been said before, is
imperical content of the groups most applicable to such. I know,
dreaming. But a news server janitorial service (no such thing, right?)
would do wonders for this place. Images only, animations only, scene
files only, all pure and simple without any follow up replies; which as
we all know become so completely OT the thread gets garbled if starting
from latest post and going to the first (don't ask, but yes, I've read
that way).
Anyway, right as rain, the only way to go is to try and be the cleanup
crew ourselves at least.
