Greetings,

I just posted a new message in:

 povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions

The message contains a list of utilities and programs that are
available in the povray.binaries.utilites newsgroup. The list is
compiled from all of the postings that have been made there that
have either an executable program or a povray related utility
 attached to the message.
For each entry I included a brief summary of it's features, who
posted it, on what date it was posted, and provided a direct file
download link so you don't have to search through the utilities
newsgroup to find the file to download.
If you want more information about a particular utility then you
will have to navigate to the utilites newsgroup and find the file
yourself. I will say that I did not cover all of the possible
descriptions for the files and you might better off checking the
original to see what kind of questions were asked and for more
detailed descriptions of the files listed.

Please have a nice day :)

Ken, this is certainly a very uselful task.
p.b.u. is now an important resource for povray utilities and rummaging
through it takes some time, so having a compiled and commented list is
handy.
Thinking about povray utilities, I was wondering if the pov-team ever
considered bundling some of the most useful macros (general purpose like
the matrix/vector alignment macros, or specialised, like the lens
flares, trees or columns ones, or Chris Colefax's macros) with the
official Povray releases. They wouldn't take much space and could be a
nice addition to the package. Support would be up to the macro author of
course.

Thank you for this usefull list, Ken.
There's a little error about the link of imprint009 which is in fact the
one of sunpos.

It was quite an undertaking and there were bound to be mistakes.
I will endeavor to compile an updated version by sometime this weekend.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused anyone.

Thanks for you support. I would like to do the same with the scene-files
groups. There are useful utilities in both the text and binaries scene
groups that would easily qualify as utilities. There many times as many
posts in those groups so it is a much greater task than just the utilties
groups list was. If anyone would like to volunteer... Well when I get the
time I will post it but don't expect is soon.

An interesting concept. If not a built in internal function how about
inclusion with the example scenes that are included with the distribution
package. They take little space and would certainly help influence
the creative process for others out there that do not frequent the
newsgroups.

As I see it, the current "macro" directory in the demo files (and that already
contains a few useful examples) could be expanded. Several categories :
- general math macros : random number generation, vector positionning...
- animation macros..
- sfx macros : lens flares...
- general object macros : lofter/shapers, extrusion, waves, terrain, particle,
liquid spray...
- deformation macros : bender, twister...
- vegetation & fur (!) macros : trees, grass, flowers, fur...
- architecture macros : columns, windows, walls, curtains..
- props macros : bottles, etc...
- people macros : blobman...

(other examples in the #macroscope of course)

Note that some Colefax macros rely on Nieminen's Mesh Compressor utility
because they read its pcm format, so that they are not totally
platform-independent (or am I mistaken ?). Also, some macros work only with
patched versions (but these patches will eventually merge with the official
version so...).

Now this is not as simple as it seems, because :
- the macro authors should give clearance for distribution (who wouldn't, but
it's necessary to ask anyway)
- some users will ask for support directly to the pov-team and we don't want
the team to be burdened with questions not related to povray development
- being in the official distribution means quality : "official" macros should
be as bug-free as povray itself. Somebody will have to take up the work of
verifying the macros, discussing with the authors etc. No little task.

Hmm, I think they are compileable on different platforms, but I don't think
there should be any more executable files in the package, that would only give
more trouble for the new user. perhaps an expansion pack on the official page?

of course.

Add a few lines in the beginning of the files: help with this file is NOT givenn
by the POVRAY team, but can be aquired on the povray.text.scene-files newsgroup.
or something.

Hmm, most macros are changing all the time, but I think this can be accounted
for by the separate authors. other things to list would be limitations.(povray
crashes in the world-creator if N>50....)

I can't find the group,
povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions has it been removed,
had its name changed, or gone over to an emailing list?

Cheers

It was still there as of 30 sec. ago.

Did you try re-subscribing to the different groups on the server ?

I don't know what else to suggest...

Ken, while I did not specifically check for the existence of
povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions, there have been no changes
to that group that I'm aware of.
