Is there any way I can map a height field onto an object? I am planning to
model a knife using POV, and the handle has a specific bumped pattern. I
have created a file to simulate the pattern using a height field, and I've
attached a render of a height field square using the image so you guys can
see what I'm talking about. Anyway, any help appreciated: like how to get
this to work, or alternate options I could use.

First of all:

Please *do not* post any binaries in this group! There are many users
who have to pay for the access to the internet and binaries take a lot
of time to load! If want to show binaries please put them to
povray.binaries.images and refer to this document.

Your question:

I think John Beales HF tools should solve your problem. If I am right
there is a posibility to map a heightfield onto a cylinder. It will be
sure a lot of work but I think it is possible.

Thank you, I will do so. I could probably get away with a bump_map, though
it would be really nice to have it be actually 3-dimensional. If it would
be a lot of work to map it to a cylinder; I'll be in for a job; cause I'm
gonna use a lathe tfor the handle. . .sigh.
