WinVN is free, and I think knews is. You might also try SLRN, which is what
I'm using. Yeah, it's a console-mode program, but it's at least as powerful
as Agent, it's an order of magnitude smaller, and source is available to boot.
I'm not sure how many of the things you specified you can do from SLRN,
though. I tend to like to do separate tasks with separate programs.

I'd hope Apple doesn't have to worry as much about hardware incompatibility,
especially after they killed the mac clones. And I doubt that 8.5 was
developed with servers in mind, which makes some (not all) comparisons to NT
less meaningful.

To answer your question: 8.5, I believe, won't run on 680x0 chips, even those
with PPC upgrades, so the LC is out. Nearly all of the code is now PPC native,
so I don't know how your friend would have it on his LC630. They probably have
8.1, which plods acceptably on older machines, as long as it has lotsa memory.

I've heard good things about BeOS too, though I've never seen or checked up on
it. Choosing an OS means balancing compatibility with everyone else for
elegance, and for me, whatever beauty and elegance NeXT or BeOS may have (or
have had) isn't enough to make up for their lack of software and users, and
although nearly everyone else I know uses Windows, it's too ugly for me. So I
have a Mac.

And no, I don't trust Microsoft, aside from trusting it to do its best to
dominate the computer industry, and to sabotage competitor's software. (That's
probably why Netscape's so much smoother on Macs. --I wonder what percentage
of crashes are due just to Microsoft's sabotage?) I don't trust them when they
try to explain themselves in their statements in that little tiff with the
Department of Justice... but I digress.
