Here is the copper for the hull and the black paint on top.

Coming along nicely, as with all of your detailed models.
I'll bet the sails and ropes will be a bit challenging.
Are you just going to wing the placement of the ropes, or use catenaries?
Are the sails going to be done with bicubic patches?
I briefly looked into sail design, and that seems to be a science and art all
its own.

Thanks for the comment, mr Eagle.
I see three main challences:
1 The decoration on the bow and stern. A heightfield might do the trick, but the
stern is round, and a heightfield isn't.
2 The figurehead on the bowsprit. I've never done anything human shaped.
3 The rigging and sails. Sails might be easy, omit them! Cutty Sark in Greenwich
is sailless.
For the ropes there are some help include-files.
Chain11.inc (Rob Antonishen, 24 feb 1997) gives paraboles or catenaries for
chains or ropes.
Rope.inc (Ryoichi Suzuki, 21 jan 2001) uses a spline to create a mesh (see
attached image).
Rigging.inc (Chris Colefax, 28 april 1998, modified Tim McMurdo, 28 February
2005) to create rigging with tackle and blocks and rope and knots.
On the modelshipworld.com website someone started a scratch build of Cutty Sark
in 2013. Not finished yet!
So good work takes time.
Cheers
Ton

You've got a lot of plans.
I think you have chosen one of the most complicated sailboats right away.

The hull already looks good, I'm curious about the rest.

It does start to look good and familiar, from seeing this boat a couple of
decades ago!

This rope looks great, nice include if it's straight out of it!

IIRC, Suzuki's macro makes really impressive looking rope "right out of the
box".
As a directly related aside:
I don't know if we have a readily accessible Colefax macro repository, but I
don't recall seeing the Rigging.inc.
It would be nice if someone could post an archive of the complete Colefax
macros, and I can probably put it on my use page so that it's easy to find.
I was also searching some stuff and found a reference to John VanSickle's
reorient_trans macro in an academic paper! ( :D )
I had to use the WayBack Machine to access his old web page - so I'll probably
try to copy-paste those onto my page, so that they aren't lost in the sands of
time.

I guess I made a mistake somewhere and sent an attachment with my Chris
Colefax stuff directly to you instead of here. Sorry Bill :-/
That's what happens when one is out of the running for too long...

I would trade all of the Chris Colefax macros to see you here. :)
Welcome back. It's good to see you.
Wishing all the best for you.

<blush> That is very kind of you indeed, Bill; thank you very much! I
hope the Colefax files can be of some use to you. I have not looked at
them for ages.

We'll see how it goes... I am mostly watching from somewhere in the
background these days. RL takes its toll unfortunately.
