I made the imprint in the ground by "subtracting" the function for the shape
from the function for the ground by "blobbing".
Have a look in these in these two SDL-files to see how this can by done:

(Notice the use of the "Squash" functions.)

Here's an image without the helical torus, just the imprint of it in the ground.
