Ordinary Elf from D&D are around 5' tall, but those from Athas are 7' 
tall and polar Elf are 7.5'.
Those from Elfquest are about 2.5 to 3', while the Ancients are 7 to 8' 
tall.
I've seen some as short as 5cm all the way up to 3m tall in a variety of 
other settings.
The height variations are *MUCH* larger that those among Humans. That 
mean that any hight you give to your elf is exact.

Maybe not, but the authors of fantasy roleplay games -- most of which
are Americans -- still do.
